Open Letter to Journalists
« on: March 05, 2009, 01:02:27 PM »
Dear  Members of the Press:

The Bring Sean Home campaign has done an excellent job of focusing attention on the widespread tragedy of parental abduction. As you are already aware, there are over 40 cases alone representing over 60 children from the United States who remain illegally in Brazil... and 1000's of other children in other countries like Mexico, Japan, India etc..  We are grateful for the support from everybody who is part of the campaign as well as the media who are doing their best to focus the public's attention on this ongoing calamity.

Through BringSeanHome.org, millions of people around the world have learned about David's fight as well as those of us whose stories are still largely unknown. The situation of Sean is relatively unique in that at this point, David is the ONLY person who has a legal right to his child. Most of the rest of us still have our children's other parent to deal with.

Consider the power that you have as journalists and the obligation to always be conscious of the repercussions that an article or story you write may have. Many of the left-behind parents have been able to maintain some sense of a relationship with their children and live in fear of additional restrictions being placed by the abducting parent as a result of an aggressive news story being published.

We ask you to be aware of the delicate balance that we must play between aggressively promoting our stories and cause and the need to be passive so as not to "stir up the pot". Please be careful to not distribute our personal information that you may have obtained as well as always remembering to contact us for explicit permission before publishing any information about our case.

We write this letter as a precaution and are pleased to say that so far, our joint efforts have been successful without any repercussions. Again, thank you for your continued support.

The Remaining  Left-Behind Parents

I know that Marty Pate and Dirlene Bindler have good relationships. I might have misspoken by saying many instead of some.

I also respectfully disagree with this.  The only way to bring attention to the growing problem of international parental child abduction is to stir the pot.

I am also one of those. I see my daughter once a month or so through Skype. She knows who I am, calls me "papai"(daddy) and we have specific games between us that I know she plays with no one else. It's not at all a relationship like the one I could or would like to have with my daughter, but a damaging news article could trigger in my ex the desire to cut off all contact.

The worst part of having limited contact is that it numbs you a bit for the enormous surreality of the situation. Our desire to have a normal relationship with our children is so big that one tends to not put so much pressure or be so diligent as when there's no access. I've noticed clearly that when she doesn't show up for skype or I don't get to see my daughter as agreed, those are the times when I work harder to get my daughter back, or come back to visit these forums.

Which is why I think it's fair to say that the LBPs who have limited contact with their children will probably be more than you think. Also, please remember now that in Brazil it is a crime to cut contact completely (as in Parental Alienation Syndrome) though it is a doozy to try to prove that, a long record of denials when attempts are made to see a child can be very helpful.

Yes, it's critical to have this notice here.

I have to fight off all the journalists wanting to write about my son's international child abduction with a stick.  It's crazy

Can't they understand that many of us are able to get pictures of our children once every year or two and may lose that if an article is published that calls out what is really going?

...

All due respect to parents who are able to have any interaction with your abducted children, you are the exception, not the rule.

There are not many, there are not some (which is the prototypical weasel word anyway) there are next to none.

If you don't want journalists or others doing articles about your children's abduction, the solution is simple.  Don't post information about them in public online forums that personally identifies you or your children.

All this notice does is given the blatantly false impression that the mainstream news media gives a crap about this issue.

I am new to these forums. Only about my third message. I am also a new left-behind parent as of June 29. Tomorrow makes a week.
I consider myself pretty resourceful generally with solving problems of many types but this task is beyond any scope I have ever tackled. Trying to work through a huge gamut of issues such as possible criminal charges, getting your child back, financial stress, emotional stress, etc. might leave any parent ready to reach for a journalist. Somebody that might get something moving faster. I have so far resisted although one newspaper has already asked for my story.
I am going to keep charging forward with research. I usually finally stop researching once words no longer make any sense and I'm exhausted and nothing is getting absorbed. I am sure I am not alone.

Hey Carlos, actually there are cases where the Left Behind Parent is able to have some sort of relationship with the abducted child. It's rare, but it happens. David did get to see Sean before he was able to take him home from Brazil. I am one of those Left behind Parents as well. I am fortunate because I live in San Diego and we pinned down my daughter's abductor/mother in Tijuana before she could hide elsewhere. You may remember her as @NuSkin_beauty from Twitter. This crazy woman followed you there.

Suffice it to say, we have decided to not go the conventional route most Left Behind Parent's have taken. It's because of this that I have been able to see my daughter on occasion. I pay the price for the privilege. Back in 2010, I was ambushed by the Tijuana police department and spent time in a Mexican prison for no reason. I just thwarted a second ambush attempt by my daughter's abductor/mother and her boyfriend just 2-months ago. There is an inherent amount of risk by Left Behind Parents who are able to see their kids at all. I think we can all agree it's worth every second. Mexico has not killed me yet...and the longer this has gone on, the more support our case seems to be getting...albeit slow.

Keep fighting!

Glad to hear you are having some success in your case.

In David's case, as in many/most, the very limited access he got in Brazil prior to his child's return home was just for show and was never intended to last nor foster a true parent/child relationship.  And, in fact, it didn't last and was accompanied by denied visits and parental alienation (every interaction a parent has with a child is an opportunity for an alienating parent to spin, manipulate and redefine the encounter in negative ways in the mind of a child.)

Because of this, many LBP's forgo access altogether to prevent their children being subjected to all the corollary baggage and abuse that comes with it (in some extreme cases every visitation is accompanied by false accusations of sexual abuse, which are never punished, but result in the child undergoing extensive and invasive examinations and interrogations.)

The fact remains in such cases though that access to our children is a privilege that can be taken away at any time by the capricious whims of their abductors.

If parental rights are subject to the discretion and coverture of the other parent (or any other agency/institution) they are not rights.  A right is unalienable or it does not exist.  Same principle applies to the child's right to a meaningful relationship with each parent.

Without even the barest modicum of parental authority you are not a parent in the full sense of the world.  More like a "Disney-Land Dad" and a visitor/spectator in your child's life (which can be better than nothing if, and only if, there's not an ongoing campaign of parental alienation that is being facilitated by the system and harming the child more than your very limited presence is helping them.)

One of the key roles traditionally played by fathers is that of setting boundaries for children.  That's impossible to do when you have no authority or when the other parent takes a perverse joy in undermining everything you do in their effort to denigrate and destroy the "non-custodial" parent in the eyes, heart and mind of the children.

Children tend to figure out pretty quickly which parent has the real power and authority and which is a lame duck with no paternal influence. Such parents become babysitters who pay money to take care of children that actually belong to the other parent in every way that matters.  Respect for such powerless parents from children, even as human beings, much less as a father, can become as distant as the child's memory of an intact family.

I applaud your effort. What do you think about the following 2 ideas (that could complement your suggestions)

My partner and I set up a charity to deliver messages to children who are separated from a parent. We call it 'Fix the Boo Boo' for parents who can't always be there for their children [www.fixthebooboo.org]. The need for it came over 5 years ago when my 2 daughters were kidnapped by their maternal family to Spain. I haven't been allowed any contact with my daughters (now 8 & 6). I can't explain how badly I want to see them.

Anyway, at Harvard we found a leading therapist in early childhood trauma who specializes in abduction trauma we've been working with. (she's one of the best in the world). She's been educated us what messages the children need to receive from me, which I post on website domains with the girls' names that I purchased. After a while, it occurred to me that I never would have known the things my daughters needed to hear from me - and most children grow up with a similar trauma as my daughters... with divorced parents. It seemed we could turn my tragedy (all left-behind parent tragedies) into a positive...

We're just getting it started and are looking for help - if you're interested...

Also, we're trying to rally support to petition US lawmakers to issue "public official inquiries" to their respective attorney generals - requesting a RICO case be filed to investigate the conspiracy to abduct my daughters to Spain.

If 1 precedent-setting case were filed, it would open the flood gates to all other left-behind parents to get their children home!!!

My 2 daughters Thanit and Athena (ages 8 & 6) both US citizens were abducted to Spain by their maternal family with the assistance of a law firm in Barcelona. We have emails between the family and a Barcelona law firm discussing plans for the kidnapping (after divorce had been filed in the US). The emails were legally obtained by authorized forensics experts.

The US court verdict last month authorized "any and all domestic and foreign politicians and law enforcement" to take whatever measures to IMMEDIATELY bring the girls into custody and return them to the US. (a copy of the verdict is at bringthanitandathenahome .blogspot.com )

Can politicians be asked to issue "public official inquiries" to their respective attorney generals requesting them to investigate the possibility of a RICO case for conspiring to kidnap US minors across international borders? (If so, that would pave the way to filing such cases in all international abduction cases -- it's physically impossible for one person to kidnap children abroad without assistance, by definition that's conspiracy - the fact that they're minors is a second federal offense, satisfying the criteria for RICO - RICO empowers prosecutors to freeze foreign bank accounts for the duration of the case (it's the only law that enables authorities to pre-emptively punish people across international borders) -- that hits them where it hurts and would bring a lot of children flying home...
