Interview: Liam Mccarty’s father

My son stolen by Italian courts

“An extroverted child who invited children in his age to play with him”, describes Michael McCarty, in an exclusive interview with the newspaper lL Giornale. “He and I we made spaceships from the sofa and we were the space explorers. Together we have made more travels than Christopher Columbus”. For two years, Liam hasn’t played with his father anymore. He no longer goes to the school where they taught him Rhymes in English. Long months in an orphanage and the traumas of a flight from there, due to a mother who suffers serious personality disorders have turned that sweet child of eight years, with big blue eyes and a lots of curly blond hair, into an orphan with dull eyes. He has been slapped in the middle of a great transatlantic controversy between Italy and the United States.

You have not stopped fighting? “I have arrived in Rome yesterday in order to looking for my son, without whom I can not live. I have right to live with him according to the American court’s sentence who has entrusted Liam only to me, in March of 2007.  A few days before that, fearing that verdict, the mother, Manuela Antonelli, had kidnapped him, ending up being the most wanted by the FBI and the Interpol”.

Where is Liam? “I do not know. I have come to look for him. Since August the orphanage is closed and maybe, they have sent him to the maternal grandparents’ house. Nobody told me that, however I am strong for him. I had made a promise to him at the clinic in Rome in which he was born. I had arrived from New York as soon as I had been able to do that. Liam had nine days of life. Manuela has gotten pregnant in the United States, but, because of the medical assurance, he was born in Italy. He is so small and so fragile and I promised him that I would always protect him”.

Describe for us the day that Liam disappeared. “I was going to the kindergarden, when I received a telephone call which informed me that Liam had been kidnapped by his mother and hidden in Italy. I was desperate. The court ruled that she couldn’t take him from New York. I called my in-laws, but they had changed the telephone number that they had for more than 20 years. Imagine, a child who was forced to hide, like a thief. According to the files, his mother would have also hidden him in the Center for anti-violence for women, probably in order to protect herself against my father in-law who was arrested years ago and had traumatized her since she was a little girl. And now a judge has sent him back to that family? I can not believe it”.

Due to the use of a homonym it was written that hiss wife was an actress. “No, my wife worked at the RAI in the United States like producer. The Italian experts have declared that she suffers from Munchhausen syndrome: a mental disturbance which encourages the mothers to bring a physical damage to the son in order to call attention to herself and it constitutes a serious abuse against the children. The New York court had entrusted Liam exclusively to me, although the fact that she had accused me of sexual abuse against my son. That obligated Liam to be submitted to incessant scrutinies. There were also the same crazy accusations in Italy, however they were judged unsatisfactory to can be convincing, and so Liam was sent to an orphanage”.

When did you meet her? “While taking my bachelor at yela, I worked part time as bartender and I saw her entering in. She was very beautiful. I took courage and I spoke with her. She had an enchanting Italian accent. We exchanged telephone numbers, imagine that I remember it until today”.

When did you perceive that your wife suffered from personality disorder? “After the wedding, its symptoms forced her to hospitalize and when I separated from her I rented a small apartment nearby, in order to continue to see and to help Liam.  But now, in that orphanage who is there for him? Who can give him back an infancy which was stolen? Every month is important for Liam. There is a ready father to bring him back home. There are also grandparents, uncles, cousins and friends who wait for him. Instead they want that I shuttle between New York and Rome, in order “to reconstruct” the ties and therefore I had to see him once a month in a big room and a staff shall observe the meeting. They say that I must wait for years. Give me back my son, let me to bring him home and he will smile again”.

How do you intend to reconquer Liam’s confidence, lost in these years? “I am working with the doctor Richard Warshak, author of the best seller Divorce Poison and director of a family reunification program called Family Bridges. It has assured to me that, once at home, in a few days Liam would trust in me again”.

L’INTERVISTA∫IL PAPÀ DI LIAM MCCARTY

«Mio figlio rubato dai tribunali italiani»

bambino estroverso,
che invitava i coetanei a giocare
con lui», dice Michael McCarty, in un’intervista
esclusiva a il Giornale. «Io e lui
costruivamo astronavi con i cuscini del
divano e facevamo gli esploratori. Insieme abbiamo
fatto più viaggi di Cristoforo
Colombo!». Da due anni, però, Liam
Non gioca più com suo padre.Non va più
alla scuola dove gli avevano insegnato
le filastrocche in inglese. Svariati mesi
Pochi giorni prima, temendo quel verdetto,
la madre, Manuela Antonelli,
l’aveva rapito, finendo tra i most wanted
dell’Fbi e dell’Interpol».
Dov’è Liam?
«Non lo so. Sono venuto a cercarlo. Ad
Agosto hanno chiuso l’orfanotrofio e forse l’hanno mandato a casa
Dei nonni materni.
Nessuno mi ha detto nulla, ma mi
Faccio forza.Gli avevo fatto uma promessa,
nella clinica romana in cui era nato.
Ero arrivato da New York appena avevo
potuto.
«Stavo andando all’asilo, quando ricevetti
nascosto in Italia. Erro disperato: il tribunale
le aveva imposto di non portarlo
via da New York. Chiamai i miei suoceri,
Secondo
Eadessoungiudice
«No, mia moglie lavorava alla Rai negli
Stati Uniti come producer.
affidato Liam esclusivamente a me, nonostante il
fatto Che lei mi avesse accusato
di abusi sessuali nei confronti di mio
figlio, obbligando Liam a sottomettersi
a incessanti scrutini.Anche in Italia aveva
ripetuto quelle accuse folli, ma l’avevano
giudicata inadatta all’affidamento,
richiudendo Liam in un orfanotrofio
».
Quando l’aveva conosciuta?
«DopolamialaureaaYale, facevoil barista
part-time e la vidi entrare. Era bellissima.
Mi feci coraggio e le parlai. Aveva
un delizioso accento italiano. Le chiesi
il numero di telefono, figuratevi che lo
ricordo ancora oggi!».
Quando si rese conto che sua moglie
soffriva diquel disordine dellapersonalità?
«Dopo il matrimonio i sintomi della
sua psicolabilità l’avevano costretta a
farsi ricoverare e quando mi separai affittai
un appartamentino nel vicinato,
per continuare a vedere e aiutare Liam.
Ma adesso, in quell’orfanotrofio chi c’è
lì per lui? Chi gli può ridare un’infanzia
che gli è stata rubata? Ogni mese è importante
per Liam. C’è un padre pronto
a riportarlo a casa, ci sono nonni, zii,
cugini e amici che lo aspettano. Invece

Ridatemi mio
figlio, lasciate chelo portia casaetornerà

la fiducia persa in questi anni?
«Sto lavorando con il dottor Richard
