I hope FIFA realizes that technology can be used to prevent bad calls from referees.
The offside rule doesn't need to be changed. FIFA has to change.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/greenslade/2010/jun/30/worldcup2010-brazil

Readers of one of Brazil's biggest newspapers were surprised to read yesterday that their beloved national team had been knocked out of the World Cup despite the side having marched into the quarter-finals.

This advert, created by a supermarket chain that sponsors the Brazilian team, appeared in Folha de Sao Paulo.

It expresses sadness at Brazil's "elimination", telling fans they could at least look forward to 2014 when Brazil is due to host the tournament. A translation reads: "The team exited the World Cup, but not our hearts. Thanks Brazil, we'll see you in 2014".

But five-times World Cup winners Brazil had already crushed Chile 3-0 to set up a quarter-final on Friday with Holland.

A spokesperson for the Extra supermarket group blamed the newspaper for mistakenly publishing the ad. It was, of course, meant to be held as a standby in case of defeat.

Sorry people, soccer will never be popular in the US until they get rid of that stupid offsides rule. Hopefully after this world cup, the aristocratic leaders of FIFA will wake up and join the 21st century by implementing technologies to prevent the DUMB calls that effected multiple games.

I'll be rooting for the Netherlands on Friday, I lived there for 12 years.

For what it's worth, the most intricate (need brains) and difficult professional sport is Baseball. +100 million people paid to attend Major League games in the US, Canada, and Japan in 2009. America's professional, National Football League, is a distant second.

I just can't get into soccer.  I love baseball though....so, I just wanted to say GO YANKEES!!!    Big Grin  (wrong thread, I know)

One of the most satisfying sports results since the US beat the USSR in ice hockey in Lake Placid in 1980.

hahaha... rolleyes
Brazil played really well throughout the World Cup, up until when they came back from the half-time against Nederlands. The team should be proud of themselves. But it is what it is, Nederlands scored more goals and end of story. That's the pain and beauty of the sport. Excitement until the last minute...I just have to wait another four years. Hopefully, USA also qualifies for the next one!

I'm not a big fan of soccer but I loved the results of that game yesterday.
It's always fun to watch the mighty get knocked off their high horses  shocked  (all the more so in this case)

I was torn between the Brazilian team and the Dutch team yesterday.. considering I have friends/co-workers in our Sao Paulo office and I have a friend in the office who's from the Netherlands...

Needless to say I've had to see him in an orange shirt and see his cubicle all decorated with Orange balloons and an Orange banner and an orange duck that is louder than the Vuvuleza...  Hi Hi Hi Hi

I agree with FC Florida and Liesl about soccer (football). Its an easy game to watch and  provokes a lot of tension, since scoring is so difficult. The World Cup is a wonderful event that unites so many countries in the world. In the field, it doesn't matter who is rich or poor, big or small. It's all skill and talent. You can almost have a heart attack when your your team is playing!

I was rooting for Brazil obviously, the USA obviously (I am a citizen of both countries) and New Zealand (husband). I was soooo happy when Landon scored that goal too. The Argentina x Germany game today was riveting.  I really hope the next 4 years Team USA trains a lot, gets new talent (what happened to Freddie Adu, he wasn't all that, right?) and does a good job in Rio in 2014. I just love the World Cup and soccer is one of the few sports I care to watch (and only at the World Cup...)

There is no sport in the world that provokes so much emotion: http://news-views.in/germans-hit-streets-in-joy-after-victory-over-argentina/.  On the other hand, this article in Portuguese talks about the pain Argentinians felt yesterday: http://www.polimatico.com.br/2010/07/os-espolios-da-guerra.html Maybe instead of wars we should have our disputes through football? By the way, I'm sorry Elizabeth, but Brazil has always played well and always will.  We still have the most World Cup wins. There's lot's of new talent ready to be found. What I dont understand is America, with millions of people from every race and so many kids playing in soccer leagues, cannot find and train new talent.
