We are absolutely delighted to let you all know Andrew Thompson has been located in Amsterdam!

We have done various reports previously of Andrew's case - he was the victim of a parental abduction - taken from Australia by his non-custodial mother - His father Ken Thompson has been riding his bicycle through Europe since May 2010, raising awareness to Andrew's case as well as to other missing children.

Ken has just arrived back in Amsterdam from Germany a couple of hours ago, Andrew is currently in foster care and Ken has not yet been able to see him, but we understand he is well!

Ken will be working with social services, police etc over the next few days, so please continue to keep him and Andrew in your thoughts and prayers that this can all be quickly resolved, and he can take Andrew back where he belongs, HOME!

Praise be, and a huge thank you from Ken for all your continued support, without Andrew being so prevalent on the internet, it is possible he would not have been found.

God bless you all - every shared message - every passed on e-mail - that relates to a missing person - makes a difference.....

This case proves that we should never give up.....

Thank you all

I almost started crying when I saw this. That's twice in a week (Jean Paul Lacombe also made me cry).

Missing Australian boy Andrew Thompson found after three years

By staff writers
September 09, 2010 10:10AM

AN Australian boy who went missing almost three years ago has been found in Northern Europe, bringing an end to his father's desperate search.

Andrew Thompson was abducted in 2008 by his mother Melinda Stratton after she was diagnosed with a mental disorder.

Despite a worldwide search, Ms Stratton eluded authorities until Monday when she tried to enrol Andrew in a school in Amsterdam, reported the Sydney Morning Herald.

Authorities were alerted after a school principal ran a security check when he noticed Andrew's passport was expired and discovered Andrew had featured in more than 180 Interpol alerts.

Andrew's father Ken Thompson, a former deputy commissioner of the New South Wales Fire Brigades, was last night on his way to meet his son.

A family Friend, Robin Bowles, told the Sydney Morning Herald, "Ken's ecstatic, emotional, relieved, overjoyed and still in a total state of shock," Ms Bowles said.

"It is no secret there were fears for both Melinda's and Andrew's safety and the longer time went on, the fear grew deeper within Ken that maybe he'd never see his son again. He wants to see him. He can't wait a moment longer."

Mr Thomson has spent every day of the last three and a half months cycling through Europe, looking for his son in a heroic search effort.

He has cycled through over half a dozen countries in his desperate mission to find his missing son.

Three-year nightmare over

It’s been almost three years after his ordeal began when his son and wife went missing on April 24, 2008.

Ms Stratton began showing the first signs of mental illness in 2006 according to Mr Thompson.

The symptoms were subtle at first, but they progressed, manifesting themselves in paranoia and false beliefs about various people, including Mr Thompson.

"I didn't realise it at the time, but it started slowly and just escalated, it was terrible," Mr Thompson said previously.

By December 2007, his wife had been diagnosed by one of Australia's leading psychiatrists as having a paranoia disorder, and left their family home on January 1.

She fled the country with three-year-old Andrew after fearing she would lose access to him over the psychatrist's report.

The Australian Federal Police issued a warrant for her arrest and together with Interpol managed to trace her to Frankfurt, but there the trail quickly ran cold.

Mr Thompson took early retirement and began to plot a way to find his son.

At that point the Family Court of Australia had granted an order lifting a ban on Andrew's name being published, to aid the search.

Mr Thompson got himself fit, organised a bike, set up a website, got a cycling shirt printed with Andrew's face on it and set off for Europe.

Wow, that is great news Andrew was found! Now, to praying the transition back to his father goes as smoothly as possible through the court system.

On another note, does anyone know if it is standard operating procedure to check a kid's passport and put the child through Interpol when registering the kid for school?? I could see checking the kid's passport if it was presented as ID, but I was surprised to see the principal looked up the child in Interpol (yet glad the principal did).

I believe she was trying to enroll him with an expired passport - which is why it had to be checked.  Whatever the reason  - it helped locate Andrew.  I wish all school administrators were so vigilant.

As happy as I am that he was found, there are questions as to whether they will release mom pending a hearing to send her to Australia.  Will Andrew stay with her?   She was arrested and should not be allowed unsupervised contact with Andrew - if any.

Ken is being very diplomatic through this.  He justs wants them both back in Australia to resolve this in the courts.  I just wish it could be a tunrover like with Sean & David, but it does not look like it's to be since he is so young.

New article suggesting mom could avoid jail time.  The bad little angel on one shoulder is wanting her to go to jail.  The good little angel is saying that Ken Thompson only wanted equal parenting, and he is very concerned for Melinda.

It will be interesting to see how this is negotiated.......

It's amazing how such wonderful news about total strangers can make one so happy.  I wish Ken and his son all the best.  Ken and his determination and love for his son are a true inspiration.  Congrats!

There are so many new articles on this case.  Ken finally got to see and spend time with Andrew, but apparently mom is going to fight to keep him in Amsterdam.  Her family in Australia is backing her.  I am concerned Ken will once again have to defend himself against serious accusations and that the battle will be drawn out to keep him outside of Australia.

Since Melinda and Andrew are both Australian citizens (with passports) - why is there even a question of them both being sent back?

Excellent news. It's striking to consider how the vigilance by the Dutch principal in this case has brought such joy and relief to one parent vs. the lack of vigilance by both US and Brazilian authorities in the Samantha Hernandez case which has created distress for her family and put a minor at risk.
